foodie pen pal – march.

I participated in my first foodie pen pal exchange last month.

Foodie Pen Pal

My vegetarian box from Lauren included:

  1. An assortment of teas that she drinks daily. I have never tried the green tea blueberry, but it was a great subtle flavor and I will have to buy this kind again.
  2. Because her favorite food is Indian Food she sent a healthy and delicious smoked eggplant dish that I will be cooking with some rice very soon!
  3. Salsa Mix to add to sour cream or diced tomatoes! LOVE this and will be using once I have a potluck to go to!
  4. The Frittle peanut treats were the first item that was gone. The little peanut brittle bites were awesome, and they were from her home town.
  5. Bear Naked Banana Granola with almond milk has become my go-to breakfast over the last week – and I will have to go get some more.

Thank you so much Lauren for a wonderful box!

cooking stoned.

I virtually met Jerry James Stone via my good friend, Ms. Beer Wench aka Ashley V. Routson a few months back and had the pleasure of meeting him, wine glass in hand, at Wine Riot SF a few weeks back.

Jerry is the man behind the cooking You Tube channel Cooking Stoned (a vegetarian cooking channel that is humorous, educational and mouthwatering). Yup. It is his last name…. And, yup… This recipe for baked oatmeal looks delicious.

food truck spotlight: fork catering.

Fork Catering is one of my favorite local Sonoma County food trucks. The sustainable food truck is based out of Sebastopol and can be found at events all over Sonoma County.

Almost every Tuesday, Jeff Bull and I take our puppies (Macey, a 4 year old pure Yorkie and Jack, a 3 year old Morkie – a cross between a maltese and a yorkie) for a walk around Spring Lake and eat Food Truck foods. Check out Park-n-Eat Sonoma County’s Facebook page for more info on the weekly event (where part of the proceeds go to Sonoma County Regional Parks foundation to keep the parks open).

This collection of pictures was taken at last night’s Park n Eat event (the sandwich included avocado, tomatoes, radishes, jalapeños, onions & blue cheese slaw with macaroni salad & a sweet potato mash with macadamia nuts).

With a seasonal, fresh and local {farm-to-table} Sonoma County menu, Fork Catering stands out among the food trucks in the area. Every time I have had the pleasure of eating from Fork, I have left feeling like I was truly fulfilled. Owner, Sarah Piccolo, makes sure to accommodate her vegetarian guests – making me a veggie sandwich after the white bean and quinoa burgers ran out.   Fork’s use of beans and quinoa are the perfect meal for any vegetarian looking to eat more than just a salad or a heavy pasta.

Other food trucks like Street-Eatz are also great for vegetarian foodies.

Here is a list of food truck events in Sonoma County this summer:

  • Park n Eat at Spring Lake – Tuesday nights throughout the summer
  • Santa Rosa Downtown Market on Wednesday Nights
  • Wine-down Thursdays – Santa Rosa Vintner’s Square which hosts Heritage Public House (new craft beer tap house), D’Argenizo Winery, Sheldon Wines, and other small wineries
  • Wheel Food and Family Fun, Third Thursdays – at Finley Park on College Ave
  • Totally Trucking Thursdays in Sebastopol at O’Reilly Media
  • Food Truck Fridays at Iron Horse Vineyards in Sebastopol - Each week one food truck pairs food with Iron Horse wines and bubbles

Fork Catering never more than four items {always one vegetarian or vegan, even if they run out early}. And is always healthy. A must-try if you are looking to sincerely taste what makes Sonoma County food stand out.

spring mac n cheese.

Adding Spring English Peas to Mac n Cheese is an easy (and very tasty) way to incorporate vegetables to meals. I bought these English Peas from Whole Foods, blanched the pods and hand picked each pea. It may take a lot more work than it does to open a can, but there is no better spring food than fresh peas!

cravings.

According to my Pinterest “cravings” board, I love cooking and fall vegetarian foods ~ pumpkin, squash, broccoli, chickpeas, kale ~ anything orange, yellow and green. According to my eating habits, I love cheese and I eat out much more than I should. I look forward to the day when the my food dreams become my real-life eating habits!
